Lao Shan Dong: Homemade noodles. I’m on the hunt for the best spicy beef noodle in town!

Lao Shan Dong: (A) 4887 Kingsway (N) 604-439-9588

After the gym today I came home exhausted, hungry & hungry. That kinda scares monkey boy. Hungry is never pretty, especially coming from me. See this. Well anyways, he said I can eat anything I want… soooo I made him drive to Burnaby. What I wanted was a hot bowl of spicy beef noodle. I heard about LSD supposedly having the best beef noodle in all of Vancouver.. gotta try this!!

  • Braised Beef Flank with Noodle In Spicy Soup ($6.95): I really love their broth! It’s not as spicy as I thought it would be coming from a Taiwanese restaurant. With reference to Bubble world, their spicy beef noodle is x10 spicier. Annnyways, I’m very picky like that. If you love your spicy I’d recommend letting them know!! The beef flank is okay.. some bites were dry. The noodles nothing special. However like I said, the broth is delicious. I slurped it all!!
  • Braised Beef Flank And Tendon with Noodle In Soup/Spicy ($8.50): I really don’t understand why the tendon would cost an extra $2, that’s kind of weird.. I didn’t try any of Monkey’s boy tendons but he said it was good.
  • I’d give the beef noodles at least a 8.5/10. Which is pretty good. Lack of spiciness for the “spicy bowl” and dry meats gave it away!
  • Restaurant is fairly new. Perhaps they just renovated. It’s hard to believe they’ve been around for over 50 years! The restaurant is brand spanking new.
  • We drove past the restaurant twice. They’re hidden behind “CATTLE CAFE”. Just look for cattle cafe next time..
  • The menu (picture above) is full of wonderfulness. I thought it was so cute and amazing of them to quote “Don’t count the days, make the days count”. Exactly what I needed to hear!

    2. LSD has been there for a LONG time. Now, I haven’t been there in a while so not sure if they have renovated. Regardless, The One (yes, it is called “The One”) is LSD 2.0 and it is located further down in Kingsway. Menuwise is different (it has other Taiwanese dishes) but it still has beef noodles.

      • I tried “The One” !!! I didn’t try the noodles though, but had some other items. I want to go back and try the hotpot. WHATS THE BEST BEEF NOODLE KIM!!

    3. My favorite TBN was from No.1 Beef Noodle House ~ 京園牛肉麵 but this was about 2 years ago, before they changed chefs/ownership.
Their ma-la (spicy) TBN was my favorite w/ the white pepper and it made me sweat & broth was delicious.
      Now, it’s tasteless.
(they have another location Beefy Beef on Main)

LSD’s spicy version is not spicy, they use spicy soybean paste vs some places where they use white pepper/chilli. It’s not “spicy”.
      I don’t like their beef cut…too lean!
-Their large beef tendon = the biggest bowl I’ve ever seen of noodles. It feeds ~3 people!

I’m still looking for my ATF place but some other ones to consider:
      Huangs
Alishan (Crystal mall, Tomato based-It used to be better, now it’s just “meh”)
      Accord 一心
      Chef Hung’s

My favorite Taiwanese foods aren’t sold in 604 yet :( :(

      • I AGREE! I use to love #9 TBN but it has changed since.. sigh I guess I’m back on the hunt for the best one! I agree with you (referring to the meat at LSD) it is WAAY too lean, causing it to get drier than usuals. I have this place in Chinatown that I really like but totally forgot the name. They use beef brisket though.

I’m going to have to try Accords!! A lot of people been telling me about the spicy beef noodle there =D

If you’re into the Sichuan version, Highgate Chinese puts out a damn fine Spicy Lamb (or beef) Noodle Soup. Also, I’m partial to Green Bamboo’s House Special Beef Noodle Soup. Good, chewy noodles and a nice deep, flavorful broth.
