Tips for Backpacking Gear Preparation

This is the perfect time to get your backpacking gear ready for spring and summer. The gentle warmth of coming spring is turning snowy ground to muddy muck. Hiking in mud is no fun. Take the next couple of weeks to clean off the dirt, do the maintenance, and apply new waterproofing. All your backpacking gear (purchase through thepnw.co) needs tender loving care.
Start with your boots. Take out the laces and check them for wear, replace them if needed (laces are cheap). Use a soft brush to remove the dried mud and loose dirt especially where the sole meets the upper and under the boot tongue. Is it time to treat your feet to a new pair of insoles? Wipe out the inside with a soft damp cloth. Waterproof your boots with the proper agent. Mink oil keeps leather boots supple and keeps water from soaking in. Spray on waterproofing works well on man-made fabrics.

Keep the spray-on waterproofing handy for the outside of your backpack. Use that soft brush again to clean off any loose dirt first. Check the zippers, make sure they work smoothly. Vacuum loose debris out of the main compartment and pockets. Make sure all the straps are in place and the buckles lock firmly. This is a great time to decide which type of pack is right for you – http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/290099/choosing_the_right_backpack_internal.html.

Trek poles are like extra legs so they need attention. Here is where to find good information for maintaining and getting the most use out of them – http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/292786/trek_poles_essential_gear_for_backpacking.html.

Hydration is important when you are on the trail. Take the water bladder out of the freezer (You have been keeping in the freezer? Freezing it makes sure no nasty mildew grows in it.) and give it a good washing out. Check that the hose and mouthpiece are in good shape. There is a filter in the water pump. It is going to need replacing if the pump is getting harder to work or the filter is coated in black goo. Examine the pump handle for cracks. Days away from civilization is not when you want it to break off. The intake and filler hoses need to be checked for kinks or splits.

Take the camp stove apart and give it a good cleaning. Screw on a fuel canister and listen for gas escaping around the seal. Fire it up to ensure there is flame around the burner. How much fuel is left from last year? Give the camp pots and utensils a good scrubbing.

Set up the tent. You will know if any poles or tie-downs are missing and if any need replacing. Count the tent pegs. More zippers to check. Examine the seams for potential splits and reseal them if needed. Look for tears in the bug screen on the windows. Vacuum out any dirt on the floor.

At the end of the hike you will be ready to rest so make certain your sleeping bag and ground pad are ready. Sweat and dirt not only make your sleeping bag smell funky they also reduce its thermal efficiency. Follow the manufacturers washing instructions. Blow up your ground pad, stand it up in the shower and gently wash it with liquid soap. Not only will it get clean but you can check for leaks, watch for bubbles. Use the patch kit that came with it to repair any holes.

All your expensive gear will last longer with regular maintenance. When its time for that first warm weather backpacking trip you will not have to waste time getting ready. The boots will get you where you want to go, your pack will carry the necessities, the tent will shield you from the elements, trek poles will ease your burden, water and food will taste good, and your bed will smell fresh and keep you warm.

Happy backpacking.

Best Layouts for Fishing, Hunting and Outdoor Lodge Websites

Setting up a website for your lodge is one of the most important decisions of your business. The key aspect of a lodge website is its ability to be found by your customers. Before selecting a web design company, the business owner should learn the basics of keyword research, consider important search terms that relate to their business and choose a specialist that can create a successful site.

Not all web design companies specialize in search engine optimization, so it is important to review past examples of success when choosing a web design company. Do they have existing clients that rank high in search engine results?

A reputable designer can explain all the factors that influence a website’s search engine rankings, suggest which key phrases might be important and offer services to help your site perform well on Google, Bing and other search engines. After all, the most exquisite and artful website in the world cannot put paying customers on your boat unless they can find you online.

Once the business owner decides to set up a lodge web site, a good idea is to create a list of features that are needed for the project. A blueprint of the site may include only a single page or a menu which includes several pages. Essential to any hunting-fishing-outdoor lodge website is the home page, which may feature a few photos and a brief description of services. My friend who’se working on sites about web hosting Canada reviews says you should seek their help first.

Larger sites will have a full menu on the home page, listing all the important sections that clients may need to access.

Many lodge owners will need a photo gallery which accurately depicts the type of accommodations they will provide. For fishing and hunting lodges, this may include a collection of photos that show the types of species found nearby as well as past successes. Other lodges such as nature or adventure lodges may need images that focus on local geography, events and recreation.

Many lodge owners will include sections that provide seasonal information, rates, types of trips, what to bring, driving directions and other important information. These sections can provide customers with help in .

Some lodges include a blog on their website. Blogs, news pages and report sections are extremely popular among audiences and can be a vital tool for building a portfolio of repeat customers. Some blogging tools combine periodic entries, photos and guests comments to create an interactive experience that attracts a loyal following of readers throughout the season.

A lodge website can also be an important sales tool. In addition to traditional services such as guided fishing and hunting trips, many top businesses offer t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and other accessories. A good website can increase sales of gear which has become a valuable source of income for many businesses.

Once the website is launched, a specialist can show you cost effective ways to improve your search engine ranks, target specific search terms and bring more readers to your site. The end result can be more paying customers that visit your facility.

Home Decorating Theme – Medieval Goth

One of the most misrepresented subcultures; Goths are not all into having everything black, gloomy, depressing, or death-related. In this article we’ll explore home decorating ideas for one of the perhaps original types, the Medieval Goth.
A man’s home is his castle, as the old saying goes, and this decorating style strives to make it a reality. Candles cast a soft glow over tapestries and suits of armor standing at attention. Gargoyle and dragon statues grace the shelves, while sword displays hang on the walls. Stained glass, wall sconces, chains, faux stone, and Gothic arches and are also design elements.

Colors would be burgundy, gold, black, hunter or forest green, and navy or midnight blue. Fabric choices could be heavier weights including velvet, tapestry, wool, fake fur, and linen. Curtains and wall hangings would use iron or pewter rods.

Furniture could be a mix of wood and stone. Throws and slip covers could be used to conceal modern style sofas. Iron hardware may be added to pieces to lend a medieval Goth flair. Simple hooks and chains can suspend tea light candles in pretty glass containers.

Now that we have an idea of what we are trying to achieve, the next question is where to find what we need? Well, I know an online shop that sells funky finds you need. I actually both a couple of wooden dinnerware sets there and it was superb!

For the fabrics, any local fabric store should have what you need. You might even find some good tapestry fabric to make your own wall hanging. If you’re an internet shopper these sites may be useful.

http://www.european-wall-tapestries.com – There are some gorgeous medieval tapestries here, perfect for Goth décor and many very reasonably priced.

http://www.housefabric.com – This website carries tapestry fabric and chenille tapestry in several rich patterns.

For the furniture and accessories; yard and estate sales and thrift stores are good places to look for items you can modify to fit your medieval Goth castle. Home improvement stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot should have iron hardware, chains, and rods. Home décor and craft stores such as Garden Ridge carry wonderful suits of armor. Statues and other medieval collectibles can be found at various places online.

http://www.designtoscano.com – Their items are a little expensive, but they are beautiful. From Excalibur to dragon wall sconces to several gargoyle sculptures and much more; even if you don’t buy something you’ll enjoy browsing.

http://www.mwart.com – This website is a great resource for medieval home decorating. I found the small touches such as the set of castle keys and helmet desk organizer very nice.

http://www.thesteelsource.com – This site has some very nice statues of dragons and gargoyles, figurines of gallant knights, banners, sun catchers, and much more.

There are so many craft projects and resources for this style! Here I’ve highlighted some of them.

http://painting.about.com/library/blpaint/blfreestencils-heraldry.htm – Free heraldry stencils including lion rampart and fleur-de-lis. These can be used to make your own shield, customizing a lampshade, or any other idea you can think of.

http://www.rencentral.com/sept_vol1/fauxstonewall.shtml – Step by step directions for creating faux stone walls.

http://www.greydragon.org/furniture.html – Not just one tutorial, but several different plans for various pieces of medieval furniture

Don’t be afraid to turn your home into your own Goth medieval castle. It is possible to create your escape into the bygone days of chivalry on a small budget with some time and creativity.

Natural Skincare: Keep Your Skin “Rosey”

Do you fully appreciate the beauty of the rose? We all know that roses are beautiful and that they smell wonderful. But did you know that they are aphrodisiacs and have antidepressant properties? And you may know that the petals are edible (my grandfather nibbled on them regularly), but did you know they have cosmetic uses? Roses are one of the many natural resources that can be used in skin cleansers, astringents, and creams and lotions. Try these recipes and see if your skin doesn’t thank you . . . and if you don’t appreciate the rose a little more.
Rose Lotion

If you have dry or sensitive skin, the rosewater and almond oil in this recipe make a wonderful moisturizer.

16 oz. rosewater
1 oz. dried rose petals
20 oz. almond oil
3 oz. beeswax
essence of rose (optional)

Add the rose petals to the rosewater and soak for 3 days and use dermaroller amazon regularly. Strain the liquid.

Fill a nonmetal double boiler with water. Put the almond oil and beeswax into this and heat until the beeswax has dissolved. Remove the boiler from the burner.

Gradually add the rosewater, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the liquid is cool.

If you are using the essence of rose, add a drop to the mixture.

Continue to stir the mixture vigorously until it is cold, then pour into a clean bottle with a stopper or lid.

You can use the lotion to remove makeup: With clean fingertips, smooth the lotion over your face. Remove with a tissue. Follow with a mild cleanser. If any film from the cream remains, simply smooth it into your skin.

Rose Cream

The rosewater in this cream acts as a moisturizer and mild astringent, while the borax softens the skin. Zinc oxide helps heal irritated skin and lanolin is a powerful emollient.

2 oz. beeswax
1 heaping tsp. anhydrous lanolin
6 oz. almond oil
2 tsp. zinc oxide combined with 4 oz. almond oil to form a cream
1 tsp. borax dissolved in 4 oz. rosewater
10-20 drops of essence of rose

In a nonmetal double boiler, gently heat the beeswax and lanolin; don’t let it burn or even simmer.

Remove the pot from the heat and slowly add the almond oil.

While beating, add the zinc oxide and almond oil cream.

Mix in the borax and rosewater mixture and continue beating until cool.

Add the essence of rose slowly until you like the scent.

With a wooden spoon, beat the mixture until it is cold.

Pour into jars with lids (this recipe will make about 12 ounces) and let it sit until it solidifies.

You can use this cream as a moisturizer alone or under make-up.

If you love roses and want beautiful skin, these recipes may be for you. What’s more, you’ll know what you’re putting on your skin and get customized skincare products at a homemade price.

Several Reasons Why You Should Show Your Babysitter that You Appreciate Them

Not all people take their children to a day care facility. Some like the idea of having their children in a warm home environment. Many parents however fail to realize the importance of showing their babysitter how much they appreciate the time and effort they put into caring for their child. This article will discuss several ways that you can show your baby sitter how much you appreciate them. You may not realize how very simple things can say so much.
One of the things that you can do to show your appreciation for your baby sitter is to make sure that you arrive after the agreed upon time. Some baby sitters set a particular time that you can drop your child off at. For example they may tell you that you can drop them off anytime after 7:00am. You should make sure that you respect this and do not arrive any early. Your baby sitter may need this time to finish preparing their home or their own family for the day before you arrive. Another suggestion is to make sure that you arrive on time to pick up your child. This means that the time you both agree upon for pick up should be kept. Of course we all know that sometimes due to traffic or other problems it is always possible for parents to be running a little late.

The important thing however is to make sure that this does not become a habit. Remember that if you are constantly late then you could risk losing your baby sitter. You should also make sure that you pay them when you are supposed to pay them. Some people tend to think that if their child is not at the baby sitters on the day that they are supposed to pay them that it would be ok to wait until the next time they see them to pay. What some parents fail to realize is that many baby sitters  are trying to earn extra money to cover their family expenses. If you fail to pay them when you are supposed to then you could be causing them additional financial difficulties. If you agree to a particular date, then stick to your agreement. If for some reason you can not afford the entire amount that you own your baby sitter, and then you should be upfront and honest with them about this. Avoid waiting until the day you are supposed to pay them to let them know that you don’t have the money. When you repeatedly don’t pay on time this tends to show your baby sitter that you really don’t appreciate them.

One final suggestion that I have found to be a problem for most baby sitters is parents not bringing enough food and supplies that the baby needs. For most people who baby-sit in their homes they usually ask the parent to bring what the baby needs for the day, so that they do not have to pay out of their own pocket. If this is what you agree to then you should make sure that you pack your baby bag the night before and in the morning check to make sure that you have everything that your baby needs. This will help to avoid your baby sitter having to use there own supplies and money to cover what your baby needs. These are just a few suggestions on how you can show your baby sitter that you really do appreciate them. It really is very simple. All you have to do is stick to your original agreement, and have a little consideration, and respect for them.

Turn Your iPod into a Home Speaker System with the Audioengine 5

The Audioengine 5 by …Audioengine is a powerhouse of volume and sound quality for your iPod. It can even be hooked up to a PC or non-apple MP3 player as well. The funny thing about it is that there’s no small docking-port for the iPod as is seen on every other iPod speaker station. In some ways that’s a good thing. It means the Audioengine 5 isn’t really designed so much with portability and travel in mind. But it can beat out many MP3 speaker sets in other ways. The sound can go where others cannot. Since the two speaker boxes are separate, you can get real 3D stereo sound instead of merely relying on a 3D simulator or driver. In fact, the sound is so good that you can use these speakers for whatever you want. So how do you connect the iPod without a port? There are minijack, USB and auxiliary connections built in to the Audioengine 5. It will still charge your iPod while it’s connected just like many docks will.
With many of the lower-end systems a big complaint was that you could only get the volume so high. Or, if you could get the volume to a decent level, it would only go there with a good bit of distortion. Not so with the Audioengine 5. You can seriously crank this thing up and still get excellent and full quality sound. There’s a second power and audio connector on the left speaker for use with the AirPort Express. A power supply is built in so there’s no need to carry around a bulky power cord with the box or “brick” on it like with so many other sound systems. As for construction, each speaker box for the Audioengine 5 is very sturdy and well built. The speakers are surprising large for an MP3 player-compatible system. But once again, apparently extreme sound quality rather than portability was the goal in Audioengine’s design. You could still travel with them of course, if you wanted.

How powerful are these speakers? Each speaker can reach a max of 70 watts. The RMS is 45. RMS is the average max output over time. The tweeters are 20 mm and silk domed. The silk rather than metallic dome gives a smoother sound. The neodymium magnets in the speakers give more power and better frequency response to the system throughout the band range from low to high frequency. The 5 inch mid-range driver uses kevlar for better than average sound. Throughout the design and construction of the Audioengine 5 it is fully apparent that nothing was done second-rate. This speaker system will give the utmost in sound quality and performance to your iPod or MP3 player of choice.

Longer Hours Doesn’t Equal Better Results

Your business is growing and you need to keep the money flowing. In order to handle the marketing, clients, operations business and more you feel that you have to put in more hours of work and more tasks in your academic diary. As you work longer you might actually make less money per hour. Thus longer hours doesn’t mean you are getting better results.
A survey conducted by Schwab Institute longer hours doesn’t mean better pay or results. The surveyed investors and found that those who worked 10-15 hours more a week earned less money per hour. In other words, they earned 33% less per hour than those who worked normal hours.

Since children many of us have been taught that if we work hard and long we will be rewarded with the results. The results in this case are a stronger business, more money and a better of style of living. As entrepreneurs we feel that we have to conquer and solve all the problems of our business. However, at some point we become unproductive.

Productivity requires that we are well rested mentally and physically. After 8-10 hours our minds begin to wonder no matter how much we desire to succeed or how focused we are on the task. In the end we find that we are doing less, making more mistakes and not using our time wisely.

The natural decision to keep working on tasks that are sitting before us sometimes causes us a great deal of harm. As we put in our 12 hour days we may find that we are alienating our friends and our family. As they pull away from us because we no longer spend much time with them we may begin to feel as though our business is more of a prison than an actual blessing.

Likewise physically we are giving ourselves the opportunity to sleep, rest, eat and exercise the way we should. Failure to maintain an appropriate work-life balance can cause of to lose our motivation and health. Once those are gone you won’t have much of a business to speak of. No one wants to go to a place they hate.

The whole goal of having a business is to increase your standard of life. To many of us that may mean more control over our daily lives, more money, more prestige and more time. However, once we actually get into the nitty gritty of running a business we may find that we have less time and energy than we did before. Perhaps we might even worry more than we did before. Balance your life and you will have higher productivity.

Alert to Parents About Their Kids and Drugs

I am not a parent but I’m a twenty-two year old that has struggled with drug addiction since I was sixteen years old. I smoked my first joint at age ten and then when I was sixteen started using ecstasy and pills. I’m writing this article because sometimes I feel like parents are naïve. They tend to think their children would never do drugs because they grew up in good homes etc. Well I grew up in a good home and I have a brother who is a police officer and I still did it. Frankly I hid it very well for a long time. Be carefull on what your kid puts on her face. Search for the best vitamin c serum for face and you can never go wrong. When I was sixteen and started using ecstasy, I only did it a few times because ecstasy is considered an upper much like cocaine. I preferred downers like marijuana and prescription pills. Xanax was my pill of choice and within six months of taking it, I was completely addicted. I’ve had many car accidents due to the xanax and my parents have found me in my room twice unconscious from taking to much. It’s been a hard battle to beat the addiction but I did. I just want to warn parents. A big thing for me was I always felt like I couldn’t talk to them. It’s so important to keep the lines of communication open with your children and make them feel loved no matter what. Most importantly never give up on them. Here are some of the signs and symptoms of drug and alcohol use.

First, changes in friends, always know who your children are hanging out with. Secondly, when your child begins to skip school and their grades decline. I dropped out when I was sixteen, which I will always regret. Thirdly, when your child becomes increasingly secretive about their possessions. This obviously means they have something to hide. Fourth, when your child starts to ask for more and more money. Remember when your child is doing drugs they will lie right to your face. They will tell you the money is for the movies or for a c.d , well if you think their doing drugs ask for receipts. The fifth sign is obvious if you find drug paraphernalia such as pipes or rolling papers, this is a clear sign your child is using. The sixth sign is bottles of eye drops. When I smoked pot and even when I was doing ecstasy eye drops got rid of the redness and the dilated pupils. The seventh sign is missing prescription drugs. In my case, my mother took xanax for anxiety and for me it was much easier and cheaper to steal her pills then to buy them off the street.

When your child is using drugs don’t put anything past them. They will do anything to get the drugs including lying and stealing. Always remember this though people don’t do drugs because they are happy. Their is always an underlying problem that their trying to run from or trying to numb the bad feelings. The worst times of my addiction were when my parents, who had been married for more than thirty years separated and were considering divorce. I basically hit rock bottom. As parents please watch and observe your children, talk to them early about drugs and how bad they are and most importantly always let them know how much you love them.

Obama Recovery Logo and Branding

First, I want to point out I placed this in the opinion section for a reason. As a common, stay at home mother who has recently embarked on freelance to supplement income for the extras her family needs, I am the market this logo idea is targeted at. By writing this, in some small way I am letting my voice be heard. If you oppose, leave a comment. If you agree, leave a comment. If you don’t care, well you probably already clicked on the next link anyway.
Obama has had two logos made to indicate the serious attention he is giving the current economic recession. We slapped that logo on water bottles custom label. The idea is that the logo will speak to the American public and mean something to us. That seeing this logo will inspire us. Make us feel better when the milk costs a quarter more than what we have in the budget to spend.

What feelings and thoughts do the logo actually inspire in me, the average American woman?

Baloney. Hogwash. Propaganda. Those are the first three words that came to mind as I read the article about the logo’s. Someone should really explain to him he won the election, and like it or lump it, we have to give him time to make a difference. Putting out pretty logo’s or decorated words are not going to give me any more confidence in him than if he sent us all a personal letter apologizing for the mess America is in financially.

Apologies and logo’s are not what the average American is looking for when they are in a budget crisis. When there are people unhappy with their jobs but terrified to put out resumes or accept a better position because that puts them at the bottom of a ladder that could topple. When people may miss out on vacations with the family this year because there is barely enough left to pay bills much less, do anything extra. With warm weather and summer around the corner people are already fretting about what ungodly level the gas is going to skyrocket to this year!

If anything, putting a logo out there just goes to show those of us who may be clueless, if that is possible, to the economy that we are in the midst of a bigger crisis than originally thought. Why? Well didn’t the Great Depression use a logo? So are we saying this current crisis is that big of a scope? I am aware that this has been the subject of a great many political debates as well as financial articles. But there are people who had managed to flit through their lives without ever giving this a thought. Putting a logo out there is more likely to scare those folks than if they had just remained immune.

I would rather get answers to questions that are plaguing the common working family than a fancy logo that is going to appear on a semi truck or a billboard. How high is gas raising this summer? How many more companies are going to move to overseas and lay off the American blue collar employee? How are the food banks going to help the people that need it when everyone needs it?

Let’s take away the pretty toys and pictures and make some real change! Why is it cheaper for companies to move overseas than stay in the states? Don’t we purchase the products? Aren’t they shipped back in for us to buy after they slapped us in the face and took away our job? Let’s give those companies a boot in the bottom instead of making a logo! Up those import taxes. Make it more expensive for them to bring their finished products back in here to sell to those they can’t employ.

Set a limit on the gas economy. Open up new sources or control the sources we have. It’s not rocket science. For years, we have had laws in effect for average utility companies, put laws and restrictions on gas. Why should they be allowed to raise their rates to 20.00 a gallon overnight when postal companies have to spend months and years begging for an extra nickel on a stamp price? The very people the government and states employ couldn’t afford gas at some point in this last year. There are government and state employees lucky if they make a few bucks over minimum wage at a fast food chain. A lot of these folks even have degrees or high credentials in their fields.

Health insurance is contributing to an unstable economy. Why is it okay to go have seven babies with seven baby daddies and never pay a dime for an insurance but the working class man pays more for his health insurance for his wife and two kids than he does on his mortgage?

Everyone will have their opinions, perhaps some see the logo in a positive light. Perhaps some are embracing this as a sign of change. I am choosing to embrace it as a sideshow. Time and energy that could have been spent making the difference, enforcing plans, and creatively thinking up solutions to problems have been wasted on a pretty sign.
